On This Republic Day Let Us Take Pledge

On this Republic Day let us take pledge to create a healthy and safer environment for women all around us.
Let us pledge to give them freedom and a happy life free of crimes on women.

Starting from home, let us give respect to our mother and sisters and other relatives. Try to understand their feelings. Give value to their ideas and suggestions. Try to keep them happy by attending to their needs. Don't keep them confined to the kitchens. Give them a helping hand in all their work and make them comfortable and feel free from stress. Treat them with equality and discuss all matters with them as with friends.

At work places and around the society also let us be good-natured and healthy minded. Treat women with respect like we treat our mother and sisters. Protect them from ill treatments and humiliations. Give help to them when need arises. Don't let them fight it alone and leave to their fate.

Do not differentiate between boy child and girl child. Give education to the girl child until she likes to pursue with the same equal importance as that of a boy. Do not press her to look after the house hold work while she is concentrating on studies.

Abolish early marriage practice and dowry system in marriages. Involve the girl participation in discussions while choosing her life partner. Do not put pressure over her in determining the choice of her life partner.

Our Police and judicial systems should also vow to attend to the problems of women promptly with out lingering over the pros and cons of the legal formalities. They should be ever ready to assist the victims and bring culprits to book immediately.

Our Pledge:

India is My Country
And all Indians my Brothers and Sisters
I Love My Country
And try to make it heaven
I Respect All Women
And strive for their betterment
I keep them happy
And never give them grief.

Men and Morality: The Need for It

Man is human by nature. Humanness is attributed by the possession of the qualities of thinking ability, interaction, care for others, sense of feeling and attachment, etc. Humanity as a whole refers to people having all these qualities. So humanity is a synonym for collection of people with all these human attributes of love, care, reasoning power, emotions, social activity and interaction, morality, etc.

Morality is generally meant to refer to the good character of human beings. Generally, we refer to a person as moral if he possesses all good qualities such as honesty, sympathy, love, kindness, chastity, etc. And a person is immoral if he does not have these qualities. But logical definition of morality does not refer to being good or bad. It refers to the character of an individual in a society.

Now, what is the significance of morality or moral values? Man lives not alone but in company. There are so many people around him and he can not ignore them. He needs to inter act with them very frequently. He can't live alone with out others. Neither can he restrain from action. To live, he has to act. When he acts, his actions affect other people around him. It can be either good or bad effect. His action may disturb other person's life or living conditions. So he should act prudently so as not to disturb other person's life. Here morality enters into the field or the need for morality arises.

If you are to live and let others live, you have to set forth some moral values within you. You should think before you act in terms of any hurdles being caused to your surrounding people. You must care for their peaceful life without any disturbances being caused by your acts.

One may think that he is free to do anything under right to freedom. But right to freedom is not for you alone. Each one has his right to freedom. So you must not enter into his field of freedom. If every one has to enjoy his right to freedom there must be some adjustment among people. And this adjustment is through some code of conduct or ethics and moral values of the society. So the need for Ethics and Morality arises if you have to live in the society.

So maintain a reasonable moral character. Give and take respect. Maintain your faiths and beliefs but respect others' faiths and beliefs also. Don't hurt their feelings either by speech or actions. Make your society tension free and a better place to live in.

Maha Kumbh Mela: The largest Gathering of Pilgrims on Earth

The spiritual bathing ceremony of kumbh mela is currently on progress at Prayag Triveni Sangamam. It is an occasion when millions of people take dip in holy waters. During this period the largest gathering of people on earth at a single occasion takes place. It is a very auspicious occasion for Hindus, who believe that by taking a dip in the holy waters at  Kumbh Mela all their sins get washed out and will attain Moksh or immortality and union with God. That too on this special occasion of MahaKumbh gathering which takes place once in 12 years.

Now, how it all started is not correctly traceable. This practice of taking bath in the holy river waters was there since the time of our Puranas. The story goes that when the ocean of milk was being churned by Devas and Asuras (the demi-gods and demons) to get the nectar of immortality or Amrita, a fighting took place in between them to have the first share of it. And, to resolve the issue and make the Amrita available to Devatas only, Lord Vishnu took the shape of a beautiful angel, Mohini and alluding Asuras, flew away with the nectar. It was believed that during this incidence, the nectar or Amrit got spilled out at four different places and these four places have become holy places bestowing people with Moksha.

These four places are Haridwar, Prayag(Allahabad), Ujjain and Nasik. So bathing in the rivers of Ganga at Haridwar, Godavari at Nasik, Kshipra in Ujjain and triveni sangam or the confluence of three rivers of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati at Prayag has become a popular ritual belief and practice since then for attaining immortality or moksh. Since the battle took place for full 12 days and nights before Mohini flew away with the Kumbh or the pot containing the Amrit, the Kumbh Mela came to be celebrated at every 12 years. Here it is believed that the time period of one day plus one night of the Devas and Asuras was equivalent to one year of human beings. So the kumbh mela is being celebrated at a gap of twelve years.

The Kumbh at Prayag (Allahabad) is celebrated when the Sun enters Capricorn or Makar rasi. It begins on 14th January (Makar Sankranthi Day) and lasts upto Maha Shivarathri for a period of 55 days or so. The events at other three places are celebrated on different periods. At Haridwar, it is celebrated when the Sun enters Aries or Mesha rasi. At Nasik it is when Sun enters Leo or Simha rasi and at Ujjaini it is celebrated during the period when Sun is at Scorpio or Vrischik rasi.

It is a great amazing event where people of various faiths and beliefs gather together leaving behind all their differences. Rich and poor, educated and illiterate, children and young and old age people, politicians and business class and all types of people from all over the world gather there with the only wish of taking a dip in the holy waters and attain moksha. The first day of the bath is mostly significant as Naga Sadhus of 13 akharas take processions with elephants, horses and chariots and music bands wearing simply nothing or scantily and take bath in groups at predetermined places for them.

The civic administrations make elaborate arrangements on these occasions to control the free flow of pilgrims to the ghats and for their amenities and safety. Numerous tents are erected for changing clothes and taking rest. Security posts and help lines are arranged with 24 hour service to look at their needs and problems. Even though through out the whole period is auspicious for taking the bath to attain moksh, some days are believed to be very very auspicious for attaining moksh like Makar Sankranthi, poush Poornima, Basant Panchami, Ratha Saptami, Bhisma Ekadashi and Maha Shivarathri on which days it is believed people directly get union with God after death.
